Tips for Campout Drivers

- Please try to be at the departure area early to facilitate loading of equipment and scouts.
- If it is a long trip, please try to arrive at departure with a full tank of gas.
- If you have a CB radio, please bring it for use on a long trip. (Channel 14)
- If you do not have a CB, the troop will try to supply one for the trip.
- One driver usually gets the job of checking on CBs and helping get them attached.
- If you have a cell phone, please give the # to the Scoutmaster and trade #s with other drivers.
- One driver usually gets the job of checking the boys in as they arrive, using a check sheet.
- One driver might supervise loading the equipment into the trailer if the QM is not there.
- On long trips, drivers are encouraged to bring a second set of keys and trade them with another driver.
- On long trips, at rest stops or restaurants, drivers are to be sure they have the correct boys in their cars before departing the rest area. Scouts do not change cars without advance clearance.
- Drivers should instruct the scouts that if they are left behind that they should just remain where they are and the car will return to get them as soon as their absence is noticed.
- Drivers can help by making sure scouts leaving the vehicle have their shirts tucked in and are looking sharp.
- The lead driver, usually the car with the trailer, will try to inform all drivers of upcoming traffic problems or lane changes.
- The tail driver should keep the lead driver informed of any problems or drop outs of the caravan. The tail driver also often acts as a blocker during lane changes.
- If a problem occurs with one car, only that car and one other should pull of the side of the road. The remaining cars will continue, for safety reasons, to an area arranged by radio to await reconnection of the caravan.
- Given the CBs, it is not necessary that the caravan is always one behind the other. As long as we are in radio contact we are all right.
- Please check, before departure, for a travel sickness bag.
- A driver staying the weekend should let the Scoutmaster know if he is leaving the site. This is especially important if he is taking his son(s) with him.
- Stopping at a restaurant, the driver should order his meal before the scouts to ensure that the driver is finished before the scouts get restless.
- Drivers on long trips should refill their gas tank as soon as possible after our return and present the fuel receipts at the next meeting, if possible, for reimbursement.
- On long trips, we travel in caravan both going and coming so that the Scoutmaster knows where the scouts are upon return.
